Why This Journey Is Different

One base. A connected British intelligence landscape.

War Rooms & Walk-Ins is designed to connect wartime command, codebreaking, universities, espionage networks, and modern hostile operations across London, Bletchley Park, Cambridge, and Salisbury. The group is planned to spend all five nights at one upscale central London hotel, allowing Westminster and Whitehall to become part of the experience.

Start exploring before you travel: meet the Cambridge Five in the interactive atlas and follow their documented connections to British institutions and Soviet intelligence.

This is not a generic London sightseeing tour with a spy theme added. The journey is being built around meaningful access, informed interpretation, small-group conversation, and time to experience Britain beyond the formal intelligence-history program.

One central London base

Rather than changing hotels as the route expands, the group is planned to remain at one upscale central London hotel throughout. St Ermin’s is the intended base. If it is unavailable, a comparable upscale hotel in central London will be substituted.

Beyond the standard museum visit

The working program includes the Churchill War Rooms Behind the Glass experience, with guided access beyond the normal visitor barriers to rooms, furnishings, maps, and artifacts associated with Britain’s wartime leadership.

The route connects the eras

Bletchley Park brings wartime codebreaking into focus. Cambridge opens the story of science, cryptography, and espionage networks. Salisbury carries the journey toward the continuing consequences of modern Russian intelligence operations in Britain.

Expert-led does not mean lecture-heavy.

Designed for only 10–20 travelers, the journey will be led by John Sipher and Jack Buchanan, working with specialist local guides and private transportation. The emphasis is informed conversation and interpretation, not classroom-style lecturing.

Your Experts

Led by people who spent their careers inside the world this journey explores.

War Rooms & Walk-Ins is shaped by former senior CIA officers who bring intelligence history, operational judgment, and analytic context to the places where British secrecy, wartime intelligence, betrayal, and modern operations unfolded.

John Sipher

John Sipher

Retired CIA Senior Officer & Former Chief of Station

John Sipher brings deep operational experience and a career spent working intelligence problems at the center of Cold War and post-Cold War security questions. On this journey, he helps connect the sites on the itinerary to the human realities of intelligence work: risk, trust, deception, judgment, and consequence.

John is also a co-host of Mission Implausible, where he discusses espionage, intelligence, and national-security issues with the kind of clarity this journey is designed to bring into the field.

Jack Buchanan

Jack Buchanan

Retired CIA Senior Officer & Travel Advisor

Jack Buchanan founded Tradecraft Travel after a three-decade career, most as an intelligence analyst. His role on this journey is to help frame the historical material, sharpen the questions, and make sure the experience works as both serious history and well-planned travel.

That combination matters. The goal is not to rush from site to site, but to help travelers understand what happened, why it mattered, and how the geography of London, Bletchley Park, Cambridge, and Salisbury shaped the intelligence contest.

Expert-led does not mean lecture-heavy.

The trip is designed for conversation: enough expert context to make the sites meaningful, enough structure to keep the journey smooth, and enough open time to experience London and the surrounding intelligence landscape as travelers, not just as students in a seminar.

Day by Day

London is the base. Britain becomes the field.

All five nights are planned at St Ermin’s Hotel in central London. Some days unfold on foot through Westminster; others travel out and back to the places where codebreaking, betrayal, and modern hostile-state operations entered British history. Together, these settings connect wartime leadership, codebreaking, elite networks, and the continuing consequences of modern hostile-state operations in Britain.
