Intelligence History Hub
Where intelligence history becomes place-based travel
This hub brings together Tradecraft Travel’s espionage-history briefings, regional guides, and expert-led journeys. It is built for travelers who want more than a museum stop or a generic walking tour. The goal is to understand how intelligence operations unfolded in real places—and how those places still carry the imprint of secrecy, ideology, betrayal, surveillance, and decision.
Some readers will come here for the history. Some will use it to plan custom travel. Others will join one of our expert-led small groups. The common thread is the same: serious research, clear context, and travel built around meaning.

Do I need to know much about espionage?
Jack Buchanan · 28 seconds
No intelligence background required. Jack explains how the conversations meet travelers where they are.
Read transcript: Do I need to know much about espionage?
There is a question about the level of expertise for people to come on the trips. We want to dial into where everybody’s level is. We don’t expect people to come in having an international relations degree or having previous experience in the intelligence community. And the level of engagement that we have with people, we will tailor to what their backgrounds are.
What makes these journeys different?
John Sipher · 31 seconds
Stories that spark curiosity, with ideas to keep exploring long after you return.
Read transcript: What makes these journeys different?
I often find what I want to do, hopefully with this trip, is to go to places, tell enough stories to get you interested, to spur you to read after the fact, too. I often find when I visit somewhere new and I learn something interesting, all of a sudden, I’m like, ‘Wow!’ And now I start reading novels, I start reading things, and it makes it much more enjoyable to me after the fact. And so that’s what I hope to do: spur some interest that allows you for years to come to be reading and paying attention.
What are the conversations like?
Jack Buchanan · 39 seconds
On our expert-led small-group journeys: an arrival dinner, shared context, and questions along the way. Illustrated audio excerpt.
Read transcript: What are the conversations like?
So these are journeys that are built for conversations like the one that John just shared. Each journey begins with a dinner on arrival day. And this gives us a chance both to get to know each other and for the CIA leads on their tour to give an overview of the connectedness of the program. Your CIA leads will travel with you for the duration of the tour and are available to answer most any questions you may have about what you see or the profession in general. I fully expect that some discussions will bridge a few days, if not the entire tour. I do want to be explicit, however: Tradecraft Travel is a travel advisory and is not endorsed by either our former agency or the U.S. government.
How are the travel details handled?
Silvia Cilia · Kensington Tours · 42 seconds
Silvia explains Kensington’s approach to selecting hotels. For Kensington-supported journeys only; arrangements vary by itinerary. Illustrated audio excerpt.
Read transcript: How are the travel details handled?
One of the advantages of traveling with Kensington is that we take care of the details that can otherwise become complicated. We carefully select the hotels based not only on their category, but also on their location, the service, the character and how well they fit into the overall journey. The location is particularly important. We want you to spend your time experiencing the destination rather than spending unnecessary time getting from one place to another.
These excerpts describe our expert-led journey approach. Leaders, inclusions, and operating arrangements depend on the departure; check the individual itinerary. Tradecraft Travel is an independent travel advisory and is not endorsed by the CIA or the U.S. government.
founder's note
Why I built Tradecraft Travel around intelligence history
I spent more than three decades in intelligence, much of it as an analyst. That work trained me to care about evidence, context, geography, pressure, and the difference between a good story and a true one.
After retiring from CIA, I built Tradecraft Travel to bring that same habit of mind to travel. Espionage history is often flattened into gadgets, myths, and movie references. But the real history happened in cities, buildings, border crossings, archives, hotel rooms, safe sites, and ordinary streets where people made consequential decisions under pressure.
These journeys are my way of helping travelers see those places with better context. Not just what happened here, but why it mattered — and what the ground can still teach you if you know how to read it.
Why Tradecraft Travel
Built for travelers who want more than a surface-level spy tour
Espionage-history travel works best when the history, geography, and logistics are handled together. Tradecraft Travel combines intelligence experience, serious research, and professional travel planning to help travelers understand not just where events happened, but why they mattered.
Led by experience
Tradecraft Travel was founded by Jack Buchanan, a retired CIA Senior Intelligence Service officer and longtime intelligence analyst who spent more than three decades working with complex evidence, risk, competing explanations, and decision-making under uncertainty.
Built around real places
These journeys connect intelligence history to streets, stations, museums, archives, memorials, former headquarters, and decision points—not just broad stories or generic sightseeing.
Extensively researched
The content and itineraries draw on serious histories, primary-source material, declassified records, museum collections, and the habits of clear analytical thinking.
Professionally planned
Tradecraft Travel is a professional travel advisory. For complex private and small-group journeys, routing, accommodations, transportation, guides, and on-the-ground logistics may be coordinated with established operating partners. See how Tradecraft Travel works with Kensington Tours to combine independent journey design with experienced ground operations.
