Cruise Line Briefing
Paul Gauguin Cruises: Is It Right for You?
An independent advisor’s guide to the traveler fit, ships, fares, cabins, strengths, and tradeoffs.
Paul Gauguin is a destination choice as much as a cruise-line choice. It offers a small-ship way to explore French Polynesia and the South Pacific, with island culture and time on the water at the center of the trip.

The Advisor’s View
Jack’s assessment
I would compare Paul Gauguin with the vacation you are really imagining: several islands from one ship, or a longer stay at one resort. Those are different pleasures. A cruise can give you variety, while an overwater-bungalow stay may be the better answer if your priority is remaining in one place.
For the cruise itself, I would choose the island group before the cabin. Adding the Tuamotus or Marquesas changes the trip more than a modest room upgrade. Flight timing, a pre-cruise stay and water activities then need to fit around that route.
The most common misconception
All-inclusive does not mean all tours and dives are included. The onboard fare has broad coverage, but optional shore excursions and scuba plans need their own budget.
When I recommend another line
If you want a huge choice of restaurants, large theater productions or a resort stay with no moving between islands, I would compare a different type of vacation. Small-ship intimacy is a benefit only if you want that scale.

Start with the geography and pace, then decide whether to spend more on a room or on extra time in the region.

|---|---|---|---|
| Main reason | Concentrate on a core island route | Explore additional archipelagos | Combine island variety with time in one place |
