Cruise Line Briefing
Holland America Line: Is It Right for You?
An independent advisor’s guide to the traveler fit, ships, fares, cabins, strengths, and tradeoffs.
Holland America deserves a close look when the route, time ashore and a comfortable evening aboard matter more than amusement-park attractions. Alaska itinerary details, ship-specific entertainment and the fare package are the decisions to get right.

The Advisor’s View
Jack’s assessment
I would put Holland America on the shortlist for someone comparing Alaska routes carefully, or considering a longer voyage where the sequence of ports matters. I would start with the itinerary rather than assume that every Alaska cruise delivers the same glacier experience.
The second comparison is the complete price. Have It All and Club Orange solve different problems: one bundles selected amenities, while the other adds service and dining benefits. Neither should be purchased simply because it sounds like the more complete version of the cruise.
The most common misconception
Have It All does not mean every purchase is included. Its excursion allowance is a credit, specialty dining is limited by the package terms, and the beverage and Wi-Fi components have defined coverage.
When I recommend another line
If your group’s main wish is a ship packed with waterslides and headline family attractions, I would compare other lines first. For a music-led trip, I would also verify the actual ship’s venues before recommending it.
Traveler Fit
Who tends to enjoy Holland America Line?
Look at how you want to spend both the destination days and the evenings aboard.
Strong Holland America Fit
Holland America may be right for you if…
- The route drives the tripYou will compare ports, glacier viewing and any land component.
- You enjoy a conventional cruise eveningDinner and live entertainment are more appealing than large thrill attractions.
- You want to price optional comfortsYou prefer to choose packages based on likely use.
Consider Another Line
You may prefer another option if…
- One specific venue is essentialEntertainment differs by ship and itinerary; check before selecting a fare.
- You expect every excursion includedA package credit may cover only part of your shore plans.
- You want an expedition scheduleA conventional port itinerary differs from small-ship landings and flexible wilderness days.
Distinctly Holland America
What differentiates Holland America Line?
The useful distinctions are itinerary access, evening programming and the way optional benefits attach to your booking.
Glacier Bay on selected Alaska routes
Holland America offers Glacier Bay visits with onboard ranger interpretation. Confirm it appears on your chosen itinerary.
Live entertainment with ship differences
Music and World Stage programming are part of the experience, but not every venue or production is fleetwide.
Have It All
A bundle combines selected drinks, Wi-Fi, specialty dining and shore-excursion credit.
Club Orange
On Pinnacle Class ships it includes a separate dining venue; other ships provide enhanced main-dining-room benefits.
Fare and Experience Comparison
Base fare, Have It All or Club Orange?
These are not three interchangeable cabin categories. Club Orange is a separate benefits decision, and package eligibility and availability need checking.
| Decision | Base fare | Have It All | Club Orange |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Pay separately for optional purchases | Bundle selected amenities | Add priority and dining benefits |
| Best comparison | Your realistic spending forecast | Bundle cost versus benefits you will use | Ship-specific benefits and available upgrade |
| Do not assume | The lowest fare is the lowest trip cost | Unlimited excursions or unrestricted drinks | A private dining venue on every ship |

Frequently Asked Questions
Holland America questions, answered
A few distinctions prevent the most common comparison mistakes.
Does every Alaska sailing visit Glacier Bay?
Do not assume so. Confirm the named glacier-viewing destination on the specific itinerary.
Is Club Orange the same as Have It All?
No. They address different benefits: Club Orange centers on priority and dining privileges, while Have It All bundles selected amenities.
Is Club Orange dining identical on every ship?
No. Pinnacle Class ships have a dedicated venue; other ships provide benefits in the main Dining Room.
Should I always buy Have It All?
Only if the covered benefits make sense for your plans and the quoted price. Compare likely use rather than the package name.
