The Advisor’s View

Jack’s assessment

Virgin Voyages is one of the more distinctive choices in contemporary cruising. Its adults-only environment, restaurant-focused dining, inclusive culture, modern ships, and social atmosphere create an experience that feels deliberately different from a traditional cruise.

I most often recommend Virgin to couples, groups of friends, solo travelers, and LGBTQ+ travelers and allies seeking a welcoming environment. The deciding question is not whether Virgin is a good cruise line. It is whether its personality, itinerary, cabin, and fare fit the way you want to travel.

The most common misconception

Virgin is often described as fully inclusive. Dining, Wi-Fi, essential drinks, fitness, and entertainment add meaningful value, but alcohol, Shore Things, spa services, and other purchases remain separate.

When I recommend another line

Travelers seeking family programming, formal cruise traditions, a consistently quiet ship, or extensive destination lectures may be better served elsewhere.

Traveler Fit

Who tends to enjoy Virgin Voyages?

Virgin works best for travelers who value an adults-only, inclusive, contemporary cruise experience and do not need many of the traditions associated with conventional cruising.

Strong Virgin Fit

Virgin may be right for you if…

You want a social adult environment with flexible dining, modern entertainment, and an openly welcoming culture.

  • You value an adults-only atmosphere The entire experience is designed for travelers age 18 and older rather than divided into adult and family areas.
  • You want an LGBTQ+-friendly environment Virgin places visible emphasis on inclusion, self-expression, allyship, and a come-as-you-are onboard culture.
  • Dining matters to you You prefer distinct restaurants and flexible dining over an assigned table in a traditional main dining room.
  • You enjoy a lively, contemporary atmosphere Music, nightlife, unconventional performances, and visually distinctive spaces appeal to you.
  • You are traveling as a couple, with friends, or solo Virgin can work especially well for adult groups, couples seeking something different, and independent travelers open to optional socializing.

Consider Another Line

You may prefer another option if…

You want family facilities, formal cruise traditions, or a quieter and more destination-focused experience.

  • You are traveling with anyone under 18 Virgin does not accept children, so family and multigenerational trips require another line.
  • You prefer traditional cruise rituals Formal evenings, assigned dining, and conventional production shows are not central to the experience.
  • You want a consistently quiet ship Calmer spaces exist, but music, nightlife, and social events remain important parts of the brand.
  • You prioritize lectures and enrichment Travelers seeking destination lectures or academic programming may prefer a more enrichment-focused line.
  • The destination matters far more than the ship A smaller or more destination-intensive line may offer longer port calls, smaller ports, and a quieter onboard rhythm.

Traveler fit depends on the ship, itinerary, fare, cabin, travel companions, and preferred pace. When the answer is not obvious, send me the sailing for review.

Distinctly Virgin

What differentiates Virgin Voyages?

Virgin did more than remove children from a conventional cruise. It rebuilt several familiar parts of the experience, including dining, entertainment, cabins, wellness, and the culture onboard.

Difference 01

Adults-only throughout

Every sailing is reserved for travelers age 18 and older. Dining, entertainment, nightlife, wellness, and public spaces are therefore designed around adults rather than divided between family and adult zones.

Difference 02

A restaurant-led dining model

Virgin replaces the traditional main dining room with more than 20 included eateries. The experience feels closer to choosing restaurants in a city, although reservation planning can still matter.

Difference 03

More included in the fare

Dining, Wi-Fi, essential nonalcoholic drinks, group fitness, and entertainment are included. Alcohol, Shore Things, spa treatments, shopping, and selected premium experiences remain separate. A fare-dependent level of Wi-Fi is included; speed, supported uses, and device limits vary by VoyageFair Choice.

Difference 04

Entertainment beyond a stage show

Live music, DJs, pop-up performances, interactive events, and nightlife are spread across the ship. Scarlet Night is the signature example: a shipwide event rather than a single theater performance.

Difference 05

Sea Terraces and signature hammocks

Sea Terrace cabins add a private balcony with Virgin’s red hammock. Insider, Sea View, Sea Terrace, XL, and RockStar categories differ enough that cabin layout and location deserve closer review.

Difference 06

A visibly inclusive culture

Virgin emphasizes LGBTQ+ inclusion, allyship, self-expression, and a come-as-you-are atmosphere. That welcoming culture is not limited to a single themed sailing or one month of the year.

Before You Commit

What to understand before you deposit

The advertised fare is only the starting point. Fare choice, change rights, cabin location, included benefits, payment timing, gratuities, and promotional rules can materially affect the value of the reservation.

Check 01

Compare the fare choices

Virgin’s standard-cabin VoyageFair Choices are Base, Essential, and Premium. Lock It In is a separate guarantee-category option with similarly strict booking rules and less control over cabin assignment. Read the complete VoyageFair comparison before choosing the lowest displayed price.

Check 02

Understand the change and cancellation rules

Base and Lock It In payments are nonrefundable, excluding applicable taxes and fees. They provide no grace period, date changes, name changes, or Future Voyage Credit. Essential and Premium provide progressively broader options, but those rights narrow as departure approaches.

Check 03

Examine the specific cabin

Category names do not tell the full story. Deck, location, balcony use, bathroom layout, nearby nightlife, possible motion, cabin-assignment rules, and the price difference between categories all deserve review.

Check 04

Separate included value from optional spending

Most dining, essential nonalcoholic drinks, group fitness, entertainment, and a fare-dependent level of Wi-Fi are included. Wi-Fi speed, supported uses, and device limits vary by VoyageFair Choice. Alcohol, Shore Things, spa services, shopping, and certain premium experiences remain additional.

Check 05

Account for payment timing and gratuities

More than 120 days before sailing, Virgin generally requires a 20% deposit; final payment is generally due at 120 days. Service gratuities are currently $22 per Sailor, per night, or $20 when prepaid.

Check 06

Verify the promotion and combinability

Public promotions, Circle benefits, future-voyage offers, Bar Tab promotions, military or first-responder benefits, and other credits do not always combine. Compare the complete booking rather than assuming the largest advertised discount creates the best value.

The cheapest fare and the best booking are not always the same.

Send me the ship, departure date, cabin, fare, price, and promotion you found. I will review the reservation as a complete decision—including whether a recently booked direct reservation may still be eligible for transfer.

Advisor Support

What Tradecraft Travel adds to a Virgin booking

Virgin’s website can display available sailings and cabins. It cannot decide whether the line fits your travel style, whether the fare restrictions make sense, or how the cruise should connect with the rest of your trip. That is where the advisory relationship begins.

Advisor Value 01

Fit before inventory

I begin with the traveler rather than the available cabin. Your preferred atmosphere, itinerary pace, dining style, budget, travel companions, and expectations determine whether Virgin is the right recommendation in the first place.

Advisor Value 02

A complete booking review

I examine the fare, cabin category, deck location, restrictions, promotion, payment schedule, and available group options. For recently booked direct reservations, I can also review whether a transfer may still be possible.

Advisor Value 03

Planning around the cruise

The sailing is only one part of the trip. I can help connect it with flights, pre-cruise hotels, transfers, insurance, embarkation planning, shore experiences, and any post-cruise travel that makes the overall journey work.

Advisor Value 04

Support after the deposit

I remain involved as final payment approaches and departure planning begins. You have one point of contact who already understands the reservation, your priorities, and the decisions that shaped the trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Virgin Voyages questions, answered

These are the practical questions travelers most often ask while deciding whether Virgin fits their travel style and whether a particular sailing is worth booking.

Policies and inclusions can change. The fare and terms attached to the specific reservation control, so current details should be verified before a deposit is placed.

Is Virgin Voyages completely adults-only?

Yes. The minimum age to book and sail is 18. Virgin’s ships do not include children’s clubs, youth programming, or family areas.

The policy shapes the entire ship rather than creating one limited adults-only retreat inside a family-focused cruise.

Is Virgin Voyages all-inclusive?

It is better described as more inclusive than many contemporary cruise lines, not fully all-inclusive.

Dining across more than 20 eateries, standard Wi-Fi, essential nonalcoholic drinks, group fitness, and entertainment are included. Alcohol, Shore Things, spa services, shopping, and selected premium experiences remain additional.

Does Virgin Voyages have a drink package?

Virgin uses a prepaid Bar Tab rather than requiring a conventional unlimited beverage package.

Bar Tab is onboard credit for eligible premium drinks. It can be shared with other people, and every person in the cabin does not have to purchase one. It must generally be purchased before sailing, and unused credit is not refunded after the voyage begins.

Is Virgin Voyages good for solo travelers?

It can be a strong choice for solo travelers who want independence with optional opportunities to connect. Solo cabins are available in selected categories, and the onboard schedule includes solo meetups, group activities, classes, and social events.

The experience is less structured than a hosted singles tour, so it tends to suit travelers comfortable deciding when they want company and when they prefer time alone.

Is Virgin Voyages LGBTQ+-friendly?

Yes. Virgin publicly describes its cruises as LGBTQ+-friendly and emphasizes inclusion, allyship, individuality, self-expression, and belonging.

That welcoming culture is one of the line’s meaningful strengths. Specific events and programming can vary by sailing, so travelers should not assume that every voyage includes a dedicated LGBTQIA event.

Are there formal nights or a strict dress code?

No. Virgin does not use traditional formal nights or a strict shipwide dress code. Travelers may dress up for dinner or evening events, but formalwear is not required.

Packing something red for Scarlet Night can be useful, but participation and the level of dressing up remain personal choices.

Is Virgin Voyages a good choice for a first cruise?

It can be an excellent first cruise for adults who value dining, modern design, nightlife, inclusivity, wellness, and a less traditional shipboard structure.

It may be a weaker introduction for travelers expecting assigned dining, formal evenings, conventional theater shows, extensive lectures, or a consistently quiet ship. Traveler fit matters more than prior cruise experience.

Can I transfer a direct booking to Tradecraft Travel?

Virgin generally permits an eligible direct reservation to be transferred to a travel advisor within 30 days of its creation, provided the booking has not been paid in full.

Timing matters. Send the reservation details promptly so eligibility can be reviewed. A transfer does not automatically guarantee a lower fare or additional benefits.

Before You Book

Considering Virgin Voyages? Send me the sailing before you deposit.

I will help you evaluate the traveler fit, fare restrictions, cabin, itinerary, current promotion, and overall trip—not just the price displayed on the booking screen.

No obligation. Recently created direct reservations may also be worth reviewing promptly for possible advisor transfer.
