For The Rest Is Classified Listeners
Follow espionage history into the places where it happened.
Tradecraft Travel connects intelligence history to the streets, cities, museums, and landscapes where the secret world took shape—and applies the same disciplined planning to custom trips, cruises, groups, and expert-led journeys.
Designed by retired CIA Senior Intelligence Service officer Jack Buchanan, with selected journeys led alongside other former intelligence professionals like John Sipher.

Interactive Challenge
VENONA: Break the Traffic
Step into a fictional and simplified Arlington Hall problem. Examine repeated key material, test possible patterns, and see why recognizing a weakness was only the beginning of the work.
Good place to begin: No cryptanalytic experience is required. The challenge is designed to show the logic of the problem rather than reproduce the full complexity of the historical system.

The VENONA Files
Follow the story from wartime Soviet communications and reused one-time-pad material through the patient linguistic and cryptanalytic work that began turning fragments into intelligence.
Read for the full context: The series emphasizes disciplined inference, partial recoveries, human judgment, and the contributions of the analysts who did the work.
Explore The VENONA Files →Private Field Brief
Read the terrain before you follow the story.
Reading the Ground is a downloadable field brief created for viewers and listeners of The Rest Is Classified. It introduces a more deliberate way to explore intelligence history through the places, decisions, evidence, and uncertainty that shaped the record.
Start with the place
See why geography matters—and how an ordinary street, building, bridge, park, or border crossing can reveal the structure of an intelligence case.
Separate evidence from atmosphere
Move beyond spy-tour shorthand by asking what is documented, what is inferred, which claims remain disputed, and what is still unknown.
Travel with better questions
Use the brief as a starting point for museums, historic sites, independent exploration, and deeper intelligence-history journeys.

Travel the History
Go beyond the story and read the terrain.
Tradecraft Travel develops intelligence-history journeys around real places, real cases, and serious context. The objective is not theatrical spy tourism, but carefully planned travel that shows how geography shaped the intelligence contest.

April 2027 Leadership
Two intelligence careers. Two complementary perspectives.
The April 2027 Dead Drops & Double Agents journey is designed by Jack Buchanan, joined and led by fellow retired senior CIA officer John Sipher. Together, they bring analytic framing and operational context to the places where Cold War intelligence history unfolded.
Operational Context
April 2027 Journey Leader
John Sipher
Retired CIA Senior Officer & Former Chief of Station
John brings deep operational experience and a career spent working intelligence problems at the center of Cold War and post-Cold War security questions. On this departure, he helps connect the sites to the human realities of intelligence work: risk, trust, deception, judgment, and consequence.
His perspective: How intelligence is collected and used, how officers assess people and risk, and how geography influences operational choices.
Analysis & Interpretation
Journey Designer & Leader
Jack Buchanan
Retired CIA Senior Officer & Travel Advisor
Jack founded Tradecraft Travel after a three-decade intelligence career, most as an analyst. He designed the journey and helps travelers frame the historical material, sharpen the questions, and understand what happened, why it mattered, and how the four-city route shaped the intelligence contest.
His perspective: How evidence is evaluated, how competing explanations are weighed, and how a serious historical journey can still work as thoughtful, well-paced travel.
This leadership pairing is specific to the April 2027 Dead Drops & Double Agents departure. John Sipher’s participation in October 2027 or other Tradecraft Travel journeys should not be assumed; leadership for those programs will be announced separately.
Tradecraft Travel is an independent travel advisory. Its journeys and participating former intelligence officers are not endorsed by CIA or the U.S. Government.
