Tradecraft Travel designs bespoke espionage-themed itineraries for private travelers, alumni groups, history clubs, and organizations seeking something far beyond standard tourism. From Berlin safe houses to Cambridge double agents, every journey is built around substance, access, and exceptional execution.
Espionage history is not ordinary travel, and it should not be planned like ordinary travel.
The most meaningful journeys are built around substance—understanding not just where history happened, but why it mattered. Tradecraft Travel designs private and small-group experiences for travelers who want more than sightseeing: journeys shaped by intelligence history, Cold War stories, diplomacy, conflict, and the hidden decisions that changed the course of nations.
Led by a retired senior intelligence officer with more than three decades in the U.S. Intelligence Community, Tradecraft Travel approaches itinerary design the same way good analysis works—start with the right question, remove unnecessary noise, and focus on what matters most. Whether tracing the Cambridge Five through London, following Cold War fault lines across Berlin and Prague, or exploring the intelligence history of Northern Ireland, each journey is built for depth, access, and exceptional execution.
This is travel for people who value context as much as destination—where the stories are as important as the places themselves. You tell us what you would like to hear about and where you would like to travel, and we take care of the rest.
These journeys are designed for travelers who want more than a destination—they want context, perspective, and a deeper understanding of the places they visit. Whether you are drawn to Cold War Berlin, the Cambridge Five, the hidden history of Havana, or the intelligence legacy of Northern Ireland, the goal is not simply to see the site, but to understand the story behind it.
Our clients are often history enthusiasts, alumni groups, veterans, retired professionals, affinity communities, and private travelers who value substance over spectacle. They are curious, thoughtful, and interested in the decisions, conflicts, and quiet moments that shaped the modern world. For them, travel is not just escape—it is a way to engage with history in a meaningful and memorable way.
The ideal timeline depends on the complexity of the journey.
Custom land itineraries typically will require more advance planning because they involve multiple suppliers, private guides, transportation, hotels, and specialized logistics that must work together seamlessly.
Cruise-based experiences are often easier to structure and may require less lead time, though the best cabins, preferred sailings, and group benefits are always strongest when planned early.
In general, the earlier we begin, the more flexibility and opportunity we have to design the right experience.
Ideally, you will tour sites associated with your topics of choice, but each trip is designed to match your needs. If you want to discuss European Cold War history while on a Caribbean cruise, we can certainly do that for you.
Yes. We will not book travel to areas that we judge will be unsafe to our guests or our guides.
Having a retired intelligence officer is optional for each group. Tradecraft Travel can book espionage-themed travel that is self-escorted or led solely by local guides, too!
In there is a retiree with your group, the answer will depend on the type of tour.
For cruise-based tours at sea or on rivers, the retiree will usually be the sole presenter and speaker on your chosen topic.
For land tours, the retiree will provide a strategic overview of the tour, accompany the group throughout the trip, and augment local guides.
Absolutely. We build each tour to match client interests. We also try to ensure groups have opportunities to explore destinations on their own during the journeys.
For most land tours, we will require at least 10 and not more than about 18 travelers.
For cruise-based journeys, there is generally no minimum.
Yes.
Tradecraft Travel is a full-service travel agency. Allianz is our preferred travel insurance provider.
Yes. Please share with us as much detail as possible during the initial mission brief and we will work to accommodate such needs.
Some destinations may not be unsuitable, especially those outside the United States where the Americans With Disabilities Act standards do not apply. European river cruises are one such example.
During our first mission briefing with you, we will begin to establish parameters and hear from you your group’s budget. We will use that to select specific suppliers and build the itinerary.
In some cases, a planning fee may apply in addition to the cost of the travel itself. If so, you will be told up front. There are no surprises.
As a full-service travel advisory, Tradecraft Travel has relationships with suppliers to secure discounted group rates.
If you choose to have an experienced retired intelligence officer to join you, they may charge additional fees. If so, those fees will be included in the proposal you receive from us.
